I don't always have a lot of time to cook, so I was falling in a rut of making the same few quick healthy meals, and was getting tired of them. This book gave me a lot of great and quick ideas. I especially like that most of the recipes you can use as a base and easily make your own additions or substitutions. The recipes are labeled for pre-run / recovery / snack etc. and I found this really helpful when planning my week. I train every day, so the less time I spend planning and laboring in the kitchen, the better.

Got this book a couple days ago and have already cooked a few recipes, which were delicious! My favorite part about the book is the "tags" at the top of each page indicating what this meal is best for (recovery, pre-workout, post-workout, gluten-free, etc). My one criticism, if it can be called that (maybe feedback is a better term?), is that I would have loved to see a designated space for each recipe to include notes. For runners, recording how they reacted to certain meals, modifications to recipe's, etc would be valuable information to record (very similar to a running log). I am resorting to sticky notes, but having it on the page would be a nice future addition to the book (I would buy that copy!). Otherwise, fantastic book; would recommend to any runner wanting to improve their diet and need guidance on what to eat and when.

I am about a third way thru making all the recipes in this book. I am a busy mom who runs as do my 2 kids and husband so this recipe book has been great. Lots of great photos and easy to read directions. The recipes are easy to follow and I have not had to buy too many ingredients I would never use again. I would not say that I am an experienced cook but I really like healthy food and am a gluten free/dairy free ovo pescatarian , the rest of the family has no restrictions but my son is extremely picky. I like the way the top of the pages state if the recipe is pre run, recovery gluten free etc, I had been running out of ideas of what to cook an have found this book very helpful. My family ( & picky son) voted the best recipe in the book to be the broiled tilapia with mango chutney. Some of my favories :Red Lentil Soup. Bolonese over shells, pizza margherita, asparagus and mushroom rice bowl, roasted curry cauliflower. I highly recommend this book!

I love the ideas this book gives me and I especially love that it has lots of pictures. I am training for my first marathon so I am trying to follow the healthy ideas and recipes this book gives, instead of the quick, unhealthy stuff that's out there.

I have made five recipes since buying this cookbook seven days ago. All five were easy to prepare and exceeded my expectations. The Multigrain Pancakes were wonderful. The Black and White Bean Sausage Soup was very tasty. The Chai Pumpkin Oatmeal needed a little more maple syrup than what was listed in the recipe, but it tasted great. The Chocolate Chip Trail Mix Balls are a new favorite (although I would suggest using a food processor to chop the nuts and pumpkin seeds into smaller pieces which in turn makes it easier to form the mixture into balls). Tonight I made the Quick Cooking Barley and Kale Soup and I will definitely make it again. After all of this cooking I have had good energy for my workouts and have felt well. This is definitely my new go-to cookbook for preparing healthy and tasty weeknight meals.

I loved the original Runner's World cookbook and was excited to see this new book. I gave this to my kids as a gift in addition to a copy of my own. I have tried several recipes and have been very pleased. They are quick, nutritious, and delicious!

Oh my gosh this recipe book is exactly what i have been looking for. Iam training for my first full marathon and i have been stressing on how to fit it all in to my daily life. I now have a solution for my nutrition. This recipe book is amazing! Thank you Thank you!

its a so so book

When I started reading "Discussing Design: Improving Communication & Collaboration Through Critique," I wasn't sure this book was necessary. It seemed to be merely a compilation of group communication principles (plus some user experience design techniques) covered in many other resources. By the time I finished reading, I'd changed my mind. This tutorial on communication and collaboration methods does contain some familiar concepts. However, it's tailored to meet the distinctive needs of designers (and those who work with designers) in environments where "getting feedback" is a common workplace expectation (or a desired outcome), but acquiring meaningful, useful information that truly enhances and advances a project can be difficult to accomplish. In the opening pages of their book, authors Adam Connor and Aaron Irizarry define "critique" as "analysis that helps us understand what is working and what isn't [in products or ideas for products] and whether we are on the right track toward reaching our goals." They explain that good critique is related to specific aspects of a product or a decision, is aligned with project objectives or best practices, and is a way to examine how and why the objectives are or aren't being supported in the most current version of the product. They contrast useful critique with feedback that is simply a quick gut reaction, or a way that people reveal their own (often biased) vision for the product or idea being discussed. They confront directly the art/design school stereotype of critique, in which work by a novice is figuratively (or possibly literally) "ripped apart" by a senior designer. The first chapter, "Understanding Critique," also examines benefits that "real" critique brings to workplace teams: building opportunities to develop shared vocabularies and advance collaborative decision-making among people with disparate backgrounds and responsibilities. In addition, "real" critique assists the iterative (and often time-sensitive) work processes favored by many design-oriented organizations.Chapter 2, "What Critique Looks Like," explains in detail how to give and receive critique, including recognizing and promoting the mindset needed for critique, along with examples of applying specific techniques like "lead with questions" and "don't assume" (instead find out the constraints that might have affected design decisions).Chapter 3, "Culture and Critique," acknowledges that applying good critique skills is not easy in some organizational settings. The chapter provides useful, workable approaches to dealing with organizational politics and entrenched processes that can inhibit meaningful collaboration on product improvements.Chapter 4, "Making Critique a Part of Your Process," continues the explanation of how to integrate critique into organizational settings, and examines three distinct opportunities for critique: in meetings or discussions focused solely on critique, in activities focused on generating and selecting ideas, and in formal review meetings intended to gain "sign off" for a product.Chapter 5, "Facilitating Critique," provides guidelines for setting up a critique session and keeping it focused and useful.Chapter 6, "Critiquing with Difficult People and Challenging Situations," revisits situations that lead to "communication miscues, conflict, and frustration" and gives additional examples of techniques and strategies for dealing with and resolving these challenges.Chapter 7 summarizes all of the key points from previous chapters, and then encourages the reader to "Go forth, create, critique, and collaborate."An appendix on "The 10 Bad Habits that Hurt Critique" provides tips for avoiding or eliminating behaviors (while facilitating or participating in critique) that "put hurdles in the way of good communication."Throughout the book, personal testimonials (some from the authors and some from other designers and executives) are used to elaborate on and give concrete examples of the general principles under discussion. Other examples are provided through cartoon-style illustrations as well as photos and screen shots.Structurally, the book contains numerous brief summaries of Central Ideas, each displayed in a visually distinctive way. Also, every chapter ends with a longer summary of all of that chapter's central ideas. These document design techniques make it easy for the reader to skim the entire text and quickly locate key points (although on first reading, the frequent summaries also add redundancy-- which the authors acknowledge periodically).Early in "Discussing Design," the authors assert that critique is not just a set of communication techniques to be used in design-focused work processes; it's a life skill that can be used to apply fundamental principles of critical thinking to "any activity or thing you want to improve." I'm not yet convinced that I want to apply Connor and Irizarry's formal analysis process to every element of my life that could benefit from revisions-- but I'll gladly recommend this book to the designers I work with (graphic designers, product designers, and web designers/developers; raw beginners as well as seasoned veterans) and to others I know who work with designers. The book "Discussing Design" builds a strong case and demonstrates a usable model for improving design-related conversation and collaboration.

I am not sure how I came across with this book but when I read it the first time last year it totally blew my mind.In my work I had become somewhat frustrated about how we communicated about our designs and the message of the book connected 100%. Could this dead simple method really help to improve the way we communicate and to do better design? I made a new year’s promise to try it out and during the last winter and spring we’ve had several design critique sessions.I found the sessions valuable even if we did not facilitate them in the same rigor as the book suggests. We also facilitated a training workshop about the method with a colleague and the participants really seemed to get excited about the topic. Future shows if the method earns its place in their toolbox. We’ll also continue running the critique sessions in the fall and I still find myself to be excited about this.So I truly recommend this book to all designers, product owners and managers, developers etc! The magic in it is that you can use it critique not only interaction design but also business concepts, technical solutions etc.

“Critique isn't about judgement. It’s about analyzing the design so that you can improve it.”"One of the most common question designers I mentor have asked me is "How do I give an effective critique?" It's a difficult thing. People can be very sensitive about their creations. If a critique sounds judgemental, the person whose work is being critiqued can take it as a slight against their skills as a professional.Discussing Design addresses the soft skills needed to improve critique interactions, and to help create a collaborative, judgement-free environment for the participants. This book outlines very specific best practices for critiquing in a way that is easy to understand, and easy to communicate to others. The unique illustrations help tell the story of specific ways to make critique effective and how to avoid giving feedback that would result in a defensive response. It even tackles tough topics of organizational culture and territorialism. This is a book I have recommended, and will continue to recommend, to my colleagues and to designers I mentor. I would love to detail all the goodness wrapped up in this book, but it is too expansive to fit in a review. You will just have to read it for yourself.

As other reviewers mentioned the cite of this book is brief. Been disappointed with many O'reily titles lately.Develop a consistent and safe place to share and discuss your work with team.

In the past year I’ve purchased multiple copies of Discussing Design. A few copies I’ve given to others to help them better understand the art of facilitating a great design critique. Other copies I’ve referenced so many times they’ve become too worn out. With the help of this book my team has went from making assumptions and ill informed decisions to leveraging critiques to know where to iterate and how to better achieve the overall objectives of our products. When it comes to understanding critique, getting and giving feedback you won’t find a better book. Needless to say, I can’t recommend Adam and Aaron’s book enough!

I’m an architect (graduated school in ‘14), so my education and professional experience thus far have involved a lot of the information that is presented in this book. There are still some helpful strategies and tips I learned, so I’d say it was worth the purchase

For those who have been in the design industry for a while, we can tell ourselves, “We need to get better at critique.” Critique is like communication: very rarely will you be told you’re doing too

#2,481 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book is really amazing. I'm a sucker for new picture books for my 3.5 year old son. I prefer books with at least a subtle message of social awareness. This cat book we read for the first time tonight and my son immediately wanted to read it again. The words are very simple, but there is a story. The phrasing is repetitive, which is nice for my son because he likes to contribute and quickly figured out the pattern, if you can even call it that and recite the story. The illustrations really make the book. During the first reading, it was hard for my son to always see that each depiction was (really, I promise!) the cat. The message here is that a single being appears different depending on the perspective of the viewer. It's a really lovely message for young children done in a brilliant, simple, engaging way. This is one of my new favorites.

I am a retired early childhood art teacher. Every illustration in this book stands alone as a piece of art while serving as a wonderful manual to encourage young minds to enjoy and hone their natural observation skills. The story demonstrates without preaching, the fact that every pair of eyes sees the world in their own different way (even their peers). It may also be your kid's first zoology book, since it accurately shows the difference in each animal's capabilities of vision and sense perception. In clear and unfussy language the child gets to travel above ground, underground, fly a bit and go underwater. They will want to do that many times.

It’s funny. Unless you’re a teacher or librarian, a grown adult that does not work or live with children will come into very little contact with picture books. Then, one day, they produce a few kids and BLAMMO! They are shot into a world they haven’t visited since they were young themselves. They grab frantically at the classics, discover that a lot of them don’t work with very very young children (since when did “Horton Hatches the Egg” have so many words?!?), and then occasionally turn to the experts for help. And why? Parents’ reasons are not united on this front. Some read to their kids to instill a love of reading. Others to build little brains. Others to simply fill the long hours of the day. Occasionally a parent will also use a book to teach some kind of a lesson. If the parent is unlucky they will get stuck with a book sticky with didacticism (an unpleasant book that sucks all the joy out of the reading experience). But if they are lucky (or they are in the hands of a capable professional) they might find just the right book, teaching just the right lesson. Here’s an example: Let’s say you wanted to teach a kid empathy or how our perceptions change depending on our own experiences and who we are. How do you show that in 32 pages? Well, you could pick up some cloying, toxic dribble that overuses words like “hugs” and “friendship”. Nine times out of ten, that’s what’s going to happen. Or, if you are a clever parent, you pick up a book like “They All Saw a Cat”. It looks at first glance like it’s just about a cat. Delve a little deeper and you’ll find it about science and art and perception and empathy. And it does it all with very simple sentences, repetition, and a lot of white backgrounds. Not too shabby. Not too shabby at all.“The cat walked through the world, with its whiskers, ears, and paws . . .” In that walking it is seen. It is seen by a child, a dog, and a fox. It is seen by a fish, a mouse, and a bee. It is seen by a bird, a flea, a snake, a skunk, a worm, and a bat. And what's important is that this “seeing” changes with every creature. For mice and dogs, the cat is perceived through the lens of their own interactions with it. For worms and bats the cat is only visible through the ways in which it moves through space (vibrations through the ground and the ways in which echolocation shape it). By the end we see a hodgepodge cat, a mix of how each animal sees it. Then the cat comes to the water, viewing its own reflection, “and imagine what it saw?”The book this actually reminded me of the most was that old Rudyard Kipling story “The Cat Who Walked By Himself”. Unlike that tale we never really get this book from the cat’s perspective. Indeed, the cat is often only visible when others see him. The similarity to Kipling comes with the language. That very first sentence, for example: “The cat walked through the world, with its whiskers, ears, and paws . . .” And as in the original art for that story, the cat here is often pictured from the back. There’s a lot of debate about whether or not a book written by one person and illustrated by another can ever be as strong as a book that is written and illustrated by the same artist. “They All Saw a Cat” makes a fairly strong argument that artist who are also authors are the better way to go. Wenzel’s sentences are so perfectly layered here. If anything, they match the personality of a cat. There aren’t many words, true. But the measured tone is at once soothing and scintillating. I liked how the book broke up the animals. The first three are potential predators. The second three are potential prey. The final six are strict observers. It also ends perfectly with the best possible sentence. Not all picture books, no matter how beautiful they look, are capable of sticking their landings. This one does.In this book the publication page (where they tend to describe the artist’s process) gets a little slaphappy. It reads (and I am quoting this precisely), “The illustrations in this book were rendered in almost everything imaginable, including colored pencil, oil pastels, acrylic paint, watercolor, charcoal, Magic Marker, good old number 2 pencils, and even an iBook.” The other day I was listening to a podcast where one of the speakers speculated that including this kind of information in a book changes the adult reader’s perspective. Would I think less of this book if I found out it was done in digital ink? Possibly, though I should note that I was blown away by the art long before I ever turned to see how it was made. And while digital art is great and has its place, I’d like to see the program that replicates what Wenzel’s done here. The sheer beauty of the book is what strikes you first when you read it. Consider the two-page spread where on the left-hand side you see the cat through snake vision, and on the right-hand side you see the cat through skunk vision. The snake’s view is a vibrant shock of color, all yellows and reds and blues. The skunk’s in contrast, looks like the soft grainy sepia-tones of an old film. Maybe “Casablanca”. Put together, side-by-side, the same cat is its own opposite. But if Wenzel were constantly wowing you with eye-popping images that wouldn’t really support the narrative flow. That’s why the pacing of the book is key. Wenzel starts the book out very slowly, with lots of white backgrounds and views akin to what we see as people. The child, dog, and fox all see the cat similarly (though I loved the oversized bell around its neck, indicating the fox and dog’s superior sense of hearing through a visual medium). The fish is the first moment you start to separate from human visuals. The cat’s large, yellow eyes are 80% of the two pages. But it is the mouse’s Basquiat-esque view of the cat that steals the show. The red background, and the cat all teeth and claws, and terrifying eyes is a far cry from the cuddly creature at the start of the story. It’s also the moment when the child readers come to realize that perception is personal. An interesting criticism of this book is linked precisely to the more science-y aspects of the text. One of the commenters on a blog post I wrote, that included this book, said that, “I desperately wanted some nice science-y back matter to tell us how and why different animals see the cat the way they do. Sure, we can go OH, this animal must be colorblind! This animal ‘sees’ by sonar! But c’mon, throw us an edu-bone here. It felt like such a missed opportunity.” This is an interesting note. We’ve grown used to useful backmatter in this post-Core Curriculum world of ours. Would this book have been stronger if it had contained a science element to it? Yes and no. It would have been a real boon to teachers, you betcha, and probably to perceptive parents who could have turned it into a lesson for young readers. If I had to guess I’d say the reason it wasn’t done may have had something to do with the fact that Wenzel is mixing his fact and fiction here pretty closely. Each animal is “seeing” as it would in the wild, but that is not to say that the art is by any means scientific. The cartoonish quality to the animals (no better exemplified than in the mouse’s bulbous eyes) doesn’t hold up to close scrutiny. I would have very much liked notes on the accuracy of the art, but I can understand the fear of asking the reader to take the work too seriously. I don’t necessarily agree, but I understand it.How do you discuss this book with kids? Well, you might read it to them, start to finish, and then ask them which picture shows what the cat really looks like. When they select (some will go with the human view but I’ve no doubt a couple will prefer the dog or bird p.o.v.s) you then tell them that actually all the pictures in this book are true. And if you really want to blow their little minds, you tell them that there’s a good chance that the way you see the world isn’t the same way the person next to you does. Everyone, everywhere sees the world different from his or her neighbor. Is it any wonder we have problems? The solution is to try and see things from another person’s view. Now, if the kids think you’re speaking literally or figuratively, it doesn’t really matter. You’ve planted the seed. Or, rather, the book has.Let us do away with the notion of “cat people” vs. “dog people”. This book is for “people”. End of sentence. And if I got a little crazy in my first paragraph here, filling you in on my view of world peace via picture books, you’ll understand when you read this book. That tired old phrase to “walk a mile in someone else’s shoes” makes no sense to a kid. But travel a page through another animal’s eyes? There’s never been a better fictional picture book that allows you to do this. If we all see something as simple as a cat this differently, what else might we not see the same? It’s a treat to eye, ear, and mind, but don’t forget. We’re all going to see this book through our own lenses. What will your kids see when they look at it? Only one way to find out.For ages 4-7

I got this for my 5 year old as a gift to celebrate his first day of kindergarten. He's all about trucks and dinosaurs, but when I read this he became fully absorbed by the different perspectives of each creature encountered by the cat. I had to throw in some extra lines to keep the story going, but what a lovely picture book! I wanted to share with my son that out in the big world everyone has a story and different ways of seeing and experiencing things. I'm very glad this book helped me deliver that message. Thanks Brendan Wenzel!

I read this book to a group of pre-schoolers ( ages 3-5-ish) and they were entranced...Many of them seemed to understand that it was different points of view, same cat: some thought ( out loud, as kids this age do!) that it was different cats...but all "got" it. I was surprised that these kids knew about skunks (nothing like that here in NZ!) but they all resonated! And the illustrations are pure genius...they will be adding that book to their library ( I ignored hints that I should leave my copy behind: I want the continuing joy of reading it to my grandchildren!)

Enchanted by the pre-publication book trailer, I ordered 6 copies of this book. One for my library and the others as gifts for children. Lucky kids! The poetic words and beautiful illustrations create a magical study on perception, point of view, curiousity, and imagination. The publisher, Chronicle Books, offers a free activity kit and discussion to download. Don't miss it! There is drawing, a cat mask, coloring, and a pin the collar on the cat game.[...]

this book has beautiful artwork and shows the cat looking different from a bunch of different animals' perspectives. It gives me 2.5yro something to think about and she loves the colors. Since the words are relatively repetitive (the dog saw a cat...the bat saw a cat...), it's easy for her to "read" it herself and study each word.

From its foundation, the city of Constantinople dominated the Byzantine world. It was the seat of the emperor, the centre of government and church, the focus of commerce and culture, by far the greatest urban centre; its needs in terms of supplies and defense imposed their own logic on the development of the empire. Byzantine Constantinople has traditionally been treated in terms of the walled city and its immediate suburbs. In this volume, containing 25 papers delivered at the 27th Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies held at Oxford in 1993, the perspective has been enlarged to encompass a wider geographical setting, that of the city’s European and Asiatic hinterland. Within this framework a variety of interconnected topics have been addressed, ranging from the bare necessities of life and defence to manufacture and export, communications between the capital and its hinterland, culture and artistic manifestations and the role of the sacred.

Holy Madness: The Shock Tactics and Radical Teachings of Crazy-Wise Adepts, Holy Fools and Rascal GurusBy Georg Feuerstein

An exploration of the shock tactics and radical teachings of "crazy-wise adepts, holy fools and rascal gurus" - the cult religious leaders who challenge our commonsense views of reality and norms of conduct. This book explores this universal dimension of spirituality in a blend of history, philosophy, theology and first-person accounts. Here are Fools for Christ, sitting naked on garbage heaps, eccentric Zen masters baffling their students with beatings and belly laughs and enigmatic spritual clowns like Gurdjieff and Aleister Crowley.

From Publishers Weekly
Russian spiritual teacher Georgei Gurdjieff force-fed vegetarians hefty meat dishes. Japanese Zen master Lin-chi thrashed his pupils. Indian guru Meher Baba remained silent for 43 years. All employed what Feuerstein, author of books on yoga and religion, calls "holy madness" or "crazy wisdom," using eccentric behavior or shock tactics to communicate an alternative vision. A former devotee of Da Free John (aka Da Love-Ananda, ne Franklin Jones), Feuerstein presents critical cameos of holy fools (Aleister Crowley, BhagwanRajneesh, etc.) as well as guidelines for choosing a wise, enlightened guru and avoiding the exploitative. Yet his gallery of spiritual eccentrics is so diverse--ranging from Christian mystics to Hindu holy men who live on garbage heaps--that it's hard to credit the author's generalizations about the value of holy folly as an authentic path to transcendence.

From Library Journal
Music mogul Lissauer has compiled an alphabetical list of over 19,000 songs, covering standards and hits that include minstrel tunes, war songs, operetta pieces, jazz, instrumentals, blues, pop, rock, rhythm and blues, and country and western. Each entry includes writer and lyricist, date of popularity, and usually a sentence or two describing its context and the performer(s) who popularized it. A year-by-year listing follows, and the volume closes with an index of the writers (but not performers). This is a good tool for basic information, but those libraries already owning the 13-volume series Popular Music , edited by Bruce Pollock and Nat Shapiro (Gale, 1975-88), and not concerned with the gay Nineties will find Lissauer unnecessary.

From Kirkus Reviews
Here, Feuerstein (The Encyclopedic Dictionary of Yoga, 1990- -not reviewed) explores the arcane and dramatic world of ``crazy wisdom''--the purposefully outrageous, convention-destroying behavior of spiritual adepts in every great tradition--peppering his fascinating historical survey of gurus and tricksters with insights from modern psychology and his own experience in an unnamed contemporary cult. ``In their realization or experience, adepts may be above good and evil,'' Feuerstein writes. ``In their actions, however, they are not.'' Tracing the shadowy tradition of crazy wisdom from the self-abnegating ``Holy Fools'' of early Christianity and Sufism (the ``Way of Blame'') to the greatly accomplished teaching adepts of India and Tibet (including the legendary Milarepa), Feuerstein paints a richly suggestive picture of ``crazy wise'' spiritual experience--as solitary and superb as a saint pretending to be mad. His portraits of modern adepts, however, reveal how difficult it is to balance mysticism with common morality. G.I. Gurdjieff, Chogyam Trungpa, Bhagwan Rajneesh, Da Love Ananda (a.k.a. Da Free John): Feuerstein alleges that each (to greater or lesser degree) indulged in outrageous behavior to flex his spiritual muscle in the face of dourly submissive disciples. Particularly surprising are accounts of the alcohol-drenched debauches of Trungpa and Da Love Ananda (Rajneesh's weaknesses are too well known to surprise). Feuerstein speculates that neurosis survives enlightenment, and he labels these singular men ``relics from an archaic spirituality''--yet he apparently longs to infuse the personal-growth field with their wisdom. A provocative and personally charged attempt to reconcile an ancient spiritual form to the modern age. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
