It provides a beginning-to-end survey of what technical writing looks like in.2016.The only caveat I'd add is that the content is targeted towards the smaller-product end of the spectrum and skips over the aspects that become problematic at a larger scale. That being said if you're not trying to solve an enterprise-sized documentation problem, this is a quick read that is full of helpful tips and links.Well worth the price of a cup of coffee!

I was asked to write documentation for my company's software and, while I got through the whole process, I knew I wanted to learn more about how to write documentation correctly. I didn't realize there was so much I didn't know about this field. I was looking for a book that was not too long, so I could read it between work assignments, and easy to understand for somebody with a very modest technical background. This book had a casual tone of voice that made it very enjoyable to read. I also learned A LOT, considering this is a relatively short book. Definitely recommend.

I highly recommend Modern Technical Writing. I have been a Web and Technical Writer/Editor for most of my career, but during the last five years, I have been more focused on Web communication. I found this book on Amazon and thought that it would be a great refresher, and I was right. It’s also a great primer for people who are new to Technical Writing.

Functionally a primer for novice software documentation writers and possibly a quick reference for intermediate documentation writers. Concise, eloquent, and refreshingly frank, the book helped me update my cerebral software from the Barker's exhaustive but dated Writing Software Documentation for my tech writing students. I hope the author continues to update this little gem.

It's a good view of the practices of a working technical writer. It'd be good paired with a textbook for a student learning more about the world of tech writing. It's also very specific to the world of software, and a lot of tech writing still occurs with durable goods (heavy manufacturing). But for 10,000 words or so, it's very on point and useful.

Very helpful to any technical writers looking to learn. Probably helpful to anyone who wants to be a tech writer too

A fast read with a lot of common sense. You can easily read through it and I’d recommend it to all as a starting point.

Most of the ones I've found seem to be self-serving memoirs by former members and associates of organized crime, written in conjunction with professional ghost-writers. These books are okay, but don't really provide me with what I want: a good, solid, informative history of the American Mob and the efforts of law enforcement agencies to eradicate it.I recently discovered just such a book: "Five Families: The Rise, Decline, and Resurgence of America's Most Powerful Mafia Empires" by Selwyn Raab. Here is a definitive history of the five great crime "families" of New York, written by a former "New York Times" investigative reporter who is also one of the foremost recognized authorities on organized crime in America.In "Five Families," Raab traces the rise and decline of the five most powerful and influential crime borgatas in the United States - so-called "families" named after their most famous bosses: Bonanno, Columbo, Gambino, Genovese, and Lucchese. These five Cosa Nostra "families" gradually became so powerful that they essentially ruled nearly all of American organized crime from the early 1930s until the 1990s, when their influence was severely diminished by the concerted efforts of local, state, and Federal investigators and prosecutors.These families were initially organized in 1931 by Charles "Lucky" Luciano, who was, at the time, one of the most notorious gangsters in America. Luciano proposed dividing criminal enterprises in New York City into five "families," with a governing "commission" of bosses. Each borgata would be organized into crews led by "caporegimes," or "capos." There was also a body of strict rules by which all members would live.Raab points out that for nearly six decades, The Five Families' criminal enterprises ran practically unchallenged in New York. Their power and influence gradually expanded into Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and other major American cities. It was estimated that, during the Five Families' heyday in the 1970s and '80s, billions of dollars were illegally diverted from the American economy through criminal activities that included gambling, loan-sharking, extortion, drug trafficking, fraud, hijacking, robbery, kidnapping, and murder.Raab also traces the efforts of state, local, and Federal law enforcement agencies to bring the Five Families to justice. A heroic and dogged group of investigators and prosecutors, most notably FBI Special Agent Joseph D. Pistone (of "Donnie Brasco" fame) and U.S. Attorneys Rudolph Giuliani and Michael Chertoff, used provisions of the newly enacted Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act to indict, convict, and sentence to long prison terms many of the Five Families' most powerful and notorious gangsters.I found "Five Families" one of the most fascinating books I've read in a long time. The book is packed with information that's presented in an easy to read and understand manner. Selwyn Raab is obviously a gifted writer whose style drew me in from the book's first paragraph.It's unfortunate that the Kindle version of "Five Families" is of such poor quality that it seriously distracts from Raab's outstanding research and writing skills. Nearly every page of the Kindle version contains serious typographical errors like wrongly italicized words, incorrect punctuation, and even misspelled words. These errors occur frequently enough for me to deduct one star from my otherwise five-star rating. They all should have been eliminated by more careful proof-reading and editing.Despite this serious technical flaw, "Five Families" is an important addition to the literature of organized crime, and should not be missed. Highly recommended.

Selwyn Raab’s book is like a special edition of Darwin’s most famous book. It documents the evolution of America’s five mafia families and does so in a way sure to be appreciated by even avid followers of real and fictionalized mob events and characters.As one such follower I learned more than I thought I knew from Raab’s analyses of the inflection points in each families’ evolution. From the history that predestined each of these points to the prevailing political, social and criminal justice attitudes that defined each inflection, I found myself marveling at how much Coppola, Scorsese and Chase got right (but not perfect) about “The Life”--and wanting to re-watch their classics through the lens of "Five Families."

Before purchasing "Five Families", I've seen Raab on several cable channels (Biography, History, etc) expounding on the structure and history of the Mob / Cosa Nostra / Mafia. I scooped up the book when I ran across it at Amazon. Wow.... Raab presents a detailed history of the Mafia and its bosses, capos, made-men, associates, buttons, and wannabes. By far the best volume on the Mob I've ever read, and I've read less than 40% of the book. Highly recommend it.

Overall quite good book. Has some details that are irrelevant and does not provide details where needed. Spends too much time in modern mafia trials and doesn’t give us more details about the 50’s and 60’s. Most of the information and history the author writes are already in documentaries that one can watch in YouTube.Overall though good book and I would recommend it

This is the only book you will ever need to learn about the mafia. It is the back story of all the headlines and all those shows about the American mob. I cannot recommend this book more highly.I bought the audio cd version to listen to in my car and the person reading it is fantastic.I grew up in NY during their heyday and cannot believe all this was going on. The NYPD and the FBI was totally incompetent. Especially the FBI. Then came Robert Blakey and his RICO statute. He understood their power structure and as such designed the law they feared most. It took the FBI ten years to use it for the first time! They didn't understand it!This is a fantastic book!

First the gigantic size, where the pages are not at all boring, instead filled with just about all the gory details of the presence of the Mafia in America, since its inception to the modern days. Truly spectacular, with plenty of glossy pictures that add value to this monumental work, by the extremely talented and able author, Mr. Selwyn Raab. Most of the people that have always been fascinated by the rise, and why not, fall of the American Mafia, owe it to themselves to own this book. Hard to count the many books on the subject that I have read to this date, watched countless movies on the subject as well, and at the end of the day, this book condenses the whole can of anchovies in an epic book. After reading this one, anyone will be able to talk Cosa Nostra like Pacino and De Niro, forget about it. 5 Stars.

Though his name was very familiar to me, I hadn't known much at all about Andrew Breitbart until I listened to this book. I probably avoided him because I thought he would be just another Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Sarah Palin, etc., willing to say anything to get noticed by conservatives. He wasn't. Breitbart was a keen observer, and as I listened I found myself constantly agreeing with his conclusions, especially with regard to Hollywood and the left. it was interesting to see him study the tactics of Saul Alinsky and use them against leftists who attacked him. I wish he were still alive so I could see his commentary on the election and all that has followed. Republican leadership is selling out those who voted them in, and I would love to hear what he would say.

I enjoyed learning about Andrew Breitbart's upbringing, critical life decisions, and transformations. Also, I was not aware that he was so involved in starting up the Huffington Post. Soon after moving on to build his big government Breitbart news network. The exciting part of the book was how James O’Keefe and Andrew took down Acorn and significantly exposed the big news networks of their liberal bias. He (RIP) and others started a movement, and I feel he would want us to continue the expansion efforts of the citizen journalist movement.

Andrews was an important figure for the modern independent media that we see today.Important not only for americans but to democracy, he inspires not only conservatives but everyone who apreciates freedom of speach.I just love the guy!

I've known for years about this book, but for some reason I never read it - Probably because I lumped Breitbart in with the Tea Party, to which he was closely associated. I lean conservative naturally, but I'm turned off by extremism - which I view the Tea Party as being. I even found the subtitle a bit egotistical, if I'm being honest.That all changed recently when I was looking for a book on the liberal media and the methods liberals use to tear everyone who's not with them down. Years ago I'd read Juan Williams's Muzzled - the Assault on Honest Debate. He framed a good argument after being victimized by the liberal machine, but there was virtually nothing in the way of execution. D'Souza never quite met the need - he focused more on Obama's motivations. There were a couple on my list regarding spin and media bias, but both were expensive. That's when I read the description for this book.Long story short - this was the book I've been looking for. Part biography, part history, part story, and part strategy, Righteous Indignation really nails the tactics used by what Breitbart terms the DMC - Democratic Media Complex. Rooted in Alinskyan Rules for Radicals strategy, the DMC doesn't attempt to push back on facts, it seeks to immediately attack the veracity and integrity of whomever is providing information it doesn't like without being concerned about such pesky things such as truth or integrity itself. Example after example, Breitbart demonstrates how he learned not only what was happening, but how to fight back. While certainly no angel, there's no denying that Breitbart knows and describes how to fight back while maintaining integrity.As always, your political leanings will determine how you feel about Breitbart and the book. But as someone upon whom Michael Moore's Farenheit 911 had the exact opposite of the intended effect - I enjoyed this book thoroughly and would recommend it to anyone who doesn't believe there's bias in the media.

Andrew changed journalism forever. Perhaps more than anyone else, he pursued journalism the way it is supposed to be. Question everything, follow through, damn the politics and political correctness. His story is very compelling. You don't have to agree with him to appreciate how he elevated investigative journalism

This was an absolutely incredible book that made you feel as if you were sitting with Andrew and discussing life events. He has been a long standing hero of mine, but from a distance. I feel as if I've visited the heart of one of the truest patriots that ever lived. I also bought the audio version, which was an incredible experience to close your eyes and listen to his story. I don't think we fully appreciate what Andrew gave this country, but he will definitely be part of history. I thank him for his service to America. Refreshing, honest, truthful. Righteous Indignation more relevant today than when Andrew Breitbart wrote it. Mr. Breitbart was a true American willing to fight for everyday Americans. He is an American hero. His subtitle for this book is not hyperbole.I would recommend this book to everyone who feels caught in the crossfire of the culture of our time. Mr. Breitbart's enthusiasm and courage in standing up for principle and against those who would destroy all that is good in America is contagious.I gave this book 5 stars because it was highly readable, relevant and exciting page turner. I stopped 20 times to google various names and topics to get the historical references. I came away from this book better informed and engaged in the news swirling around me. Read this book!

I was aware of AB prior to reading book, didn't know of his upbringing or back story though. So many former liberals out there espousing conservatives views these days. I voted for Carter. Yes, only because he was from the South. Yes, I was an idiot, a former southern born and bred, Democrat. Only follow up I would like to see is investigation into how he died. Not long after bringing down Weiner did he pass. Weiner was tied to Clintons (Huma, wife) and Clintons have more than a few questionable deaths on their resume. Really good book, good background info on media, Democrats, Hollywood.

I am in a Masters in Nursing Education program now and we use this book in my course of studies. I will keep it for my own personal reference book once I begin teaching. It is really helpful and easy to use. I like the book and will add it to my library.

I used this for my masters of nursing education program and rented it- bad choice. I used it for the next 4 semesters. Great book for nursing educators!! Wish I would have bought it to begin with. Spent way more money renting and extending the rental.

Really great book (as far as textbooks go) with regard mostly to nursing academia but also applicable to clinical education. Good resource for curriculum development and up to date with alternative teaching and learning strategies.

This is a great book that was required for my graduate program. The Kindle version is not a good version because the page has to be zoomed into in order to be read. You would be better served getting it on VitalSource bookshelf. The book is great and has excellent information!
